A systematic review (high level scientific evidence) recently found those with celiac may be at increased risk for SIBO. Graves’ disease is a condition in which the body produces too much thyroid hormone, essentially the opposite of Hashimoto’s hypothyroid. However, both Hashimoto’s and Graves’ have an underlying immune component thus making functional medicine a management consideration. Today we speak with Zenaida who has overcome Graves’ with a combination of functional and conventional medicine care, and is now off all medication. In the clinic I often see problems in the gut as the true underlying cause of fatigue and/or adrenal fatigue. Gut microbiota is the newest health craze. Problems with the good bacteria in the intestines have been correlated with everything from obesity to cardiovascular disease. However,correlation does not mean causation, and certainly does not mean we have successful treatments. So what about microbiota and weight gain? Helminth therapy essentially refers to using health-promoting worms in a very similar manner to how we use probiotics. Healthy helminths may be an important, and missing, part of our gut microbiota communities.
