I recently spoke at the International Congress on Natural Medicine in Hunter Valley, Australia. There were lots of questions from the audience on gut and thyroid, which I did not have time to answer. Today, I answer these questions with Nathan Rose, an organizer from the conference. I think you will enjoy these questions, which get to the bottom line regarding what to do for improving gut and thyroid health.

Red meat is often vilified as being unhealthy, artery clogging, cancer promoting, etc.… However, a recent meta-analysis has found that it might be unhealthy behaviors that accompany red meat consumption that are responsible and not the red meat itself. Let’s discuss.

The impact of the gut on one’s overall health is quite remarkable. Knowing this leads to a very tempting proposition – map the world of bacteria in your gut and then treat imbalances to prevent and reverse disease. Sounds reasonable, but there are some major errors with this assumption. Understanding what to do and what not to do can prevent hundreds of dollars in useless testing and treatment. Today we speak with one of the leading researchers in the world in this area, professor Rob Knight.

Gluten free diets can certainly be helpful, no question. However, there are some people who go gluten free and don’t feel fully improved. There is a well identified and somewhat simple answer that may help these people, a low FODMAP diet. Let’s discuss a recent study that found that FODMAP avoidance was more effective for those with self-diagnosed non-celiac gluten sensitivity than was gluten avoidance.

I wanted to share with you today a recent interview I did with Dr. Ben Weitz on his podcast, the Rational Wellness Podcast, where we talked all about GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. I think you’ll like it. It’s a little bit longer than our normal videos, but we get pretty deep into GERD and there’s a lot to say here. We haven’t talked about it much in the past, so I’m hoping you’ll find the information both insightful, interesting, and above all else, hopefully useful.

A recent study has shown that probiotics can help reduce gas and improve constipation by decreasing levels of certain bacteria in the gut. These bacteria include the organism responsible for methane SIBO (technically not a bacteria, it’s an archaea). Was this a ‘special’ probiotic? Not really. Let’s discuss the details.

Worm therapy might be the missing link for gut health. This is because most of our hunter-gatherer ancestors were colonized by worms, and these worms appear to have an anti-inflammatory effect. Modern day, we are missing these worms and their anti-inflammatory benefits. Today I speak with Duke researcher Dr. William Parker. We discuss how worm therapy might be able to help IBS, IBD, depression, anxiety, allergy, and even autism.

Disorders in immune function are a modern day epidemic which manifest as a litany of immune and autoimmune conditions like hypothyroidism, celiac disease, IBD, RA, IBS, and depression. The gut is possibly the most impactful organ influencing the immune system. By understanding how to optimize gut health and gut immune function, we can unlock a powerful method for improving this array of immune and autoimmune conditions. However, what was healthy for our ancestor’s immune systems may not be healthy for a Western immune system. This talk will outline where we should replicate the ancestral environment for optimum immune health, but also where we should make important modifications to better suit the modern-day immune system.
