When women enter perimenopause and menopause, estrogen declines and other female hormonal cycles shift. Even younger women can experience female hormone imbalances. Managing gut health differently can be one foundational piece to restoring balance. Gluconeogenesis (using glucose for fuel) is an estrogen-dependent process, so a diet that uses ketones can be beneficial in the midst of hormonal changes. Expert Dr. Anna Cabeca’s patients have seen success with a combination of a ketogenic-alkaline diet, lifestyle, and, in some cases, supplements. Other factors may skew balance and are worth looking into, like stress, lack of vitamin D, inflammation, and food or toxin sensitivities. https://drruscio.com/?p=28606

It can be frustrating if you’ve followed all the right advice on being healthy, and your gut and hormones are still acting up. Daffnee was in great physical shape, with several exercise classes a week, on the paleo diet, sleeping well, and taking birth control. Her existing IBS and celiac were under control. But her gut health was mysteriously declining, giving her bloating, brain fog, fatigue and more. When she began following steps from the Healthy Gut, Healthy You protocol, like targeted probiotics and adrenal support, she started feeling healthy and energetic again. She was able to support her hormones better too, and successfully transitioned off 10 years of birth control with no side effects. https://drruscio.com/?p=28605

Parasites were once a trendy topic to discuss in gut health, now small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a buzzword. Both still play a real role and should be considered if you are struggling with dysbiosis, inflammation, or other chronic conditions. Parasites may fuel changes in the microbiome, but can also take advantage of an already compromised gut. Holistic solutions and supporting the gut terrain are key. Frank pathogens should always be treated. Testing and treatment options are advancing, but still imperfect, so diagnoses and protocols still rely on a medical professional’s best judgment. https://drruscio.com/?p=28269

Some debates about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can take information out of context. A nuanced examination of relapse rates after Rifaximin, or breath test intervals, may spur a conclusion that SIBO treatments and tests just don’t work. Research disagrees over the extent to which antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials, probiotics, the low FODMAP diet, and other treatments impact SIBO. SIBO is a complex condition, and treating for the root cause is important. We discuss our clinical perspectives and the latest research on SIBO testing and treatment. https://drruscio.com/?p=28107

The gut and the liver may be more connected than you expect: probiotics can reduce liver enzymes from non-alcoholic fatty liver. A recent meta-analysis showed that two liver enzymes, ALT and AST, a byproduct of liver damage, were significantly reduced in test patients when taking lactobacillus-bifidobacterium blends of probiotics. Insulin resistance also improved. If you’re struggling with a liver condition, it’s important to consider the impact of your gut health. https://drruscio.com/?p=28102

In the last several years, medical specialists have started using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to address both skin rejuvenation and hair loss for men and women. Hair loss can often be associated with loss of blood flow to the scalp. PRP, which is “spun up” from your own blood, is a relatively safe and natural way to stimulate hair growth or collagen production in the skin. Results vary, but with minimal side effects and relatively low cost, PRP treatment is worth investigating. https://drruscio.com/?p=27839

New scientific findings show that natural light, and light bulbs which closely mimic natural light, are closely tied to optimal memory formation. Light anchors the timing of our circadian rhythms, impacting sleep. The better you sleep, the better you encode memory. Indoor light bulbs which have less natural tones and brightness can have a detrimental effect on memory. Even if you optimize your indoor conditions, it’s important to get outside regularly. Technology that pulses light shows promise if you’re a jet-lagged traveler, shift worker, or someone who stays out late on weekends. https://drruscio.com/?p=27834

Regenerative injection therapies like Prolotherapy, PRP, and Stem Cell therapy are becoming more widely known as treatments for joint pain. While Stem Cell therapy has grown in popularity, it’s older counterparts - prolotherapy and PRP still serve a great deal of purpose when it comes to treating joint pain. When it comes to cost, risk, and invasiveness, Prolotherapy is the least, followed by PRP then Stem Cell therapy. It can be advantageous to seek out a practitioner who has been doing this kind of work, starting with Prolotherapy, for many years. They will be your best guide for treatment. So before you race out to get Stem Cell therapy, keep an open mind and consider that a lower cost, lower risk, (Prolo or PRP) therapy might be just the thing you need. https://drruscio.com/?p=27637

When you’re sick and want to feel better, options like taking medication seem rather attractive. One thing to be aware of, is the over-prescribing of thyroid medication. Many people do not need to be on Thyroid medication for life or at all. Unfortunately, over-diagnosis is becoming too common. One study looking at the overuse of Levothyroxine Replacement Therapy, found that 60% of those on LT4 did not need to be taking it. The study concluded that the diagnosis needs to be more firmly established before treatment initiation and to undertake periodic evaluation of all patients on chronic LT4 treatment. https://drruscio.com/?p=27634

A simple test can inform if you are consuming adequate omega-3s to prevent heart disease.  In fact, preliminary evidence shows this test to be more predictive than markers like C-reactive protein, homocysteine or a cholesterol panel.  Today we speak with researcher Dr. Bill Harris on the Omega-3 Index test. https://drruscio.com/?p=27184

Shockwave therapy can be used to improve blood flow to the penis and vagina by stimulating the growth of new blood vessels. Today we focus on the male application but everything discussed translates to women’s sexual health also. Perhaps the most important takeaway from this episode is that erectile dysfunction is a proxy for overall health, more often than not, it mirrors coronary health. In this episode, you’ll learn about what to look out for and what may be the cause. https://drruscio.com/?p=27089

Dr. Nigh explains how and why glyphosate could be one of the causes of SIBO.  Glyphosate has a way of interrupting the bodies natural process of converting sulfur into sulfate. The body adapts by calling on bacteria to do the job which can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria otherwise known as SIBO. https://drruscio.com/?p=26949

We touch on gluten sensitivity and the Europe phenomenon – why some people find it easier to consume gluten in Europe than here in the states. We also discuss sulfur sensitivity as a cause of inflammation and digestive distress.  Many healthy foods contain sulfur so while it may be counterintuitive to remove them from your diet, the bottom line is … if you are symptomatic, it’s worth trying a low-sulfur diet for a week to see if you notice an improvement.

The field of functional medicine has become too liberal with how quickly they label someone with a diagnosis of ‘hypothyroid’.  This might sound appealing, “Yes, I finally have a diagnosis”.  However, the hidden danger is that taking unneeded thyroid medication can make your symptoms worse.  Let’s detail how to know if you are or are not hypothyroid. https://drruscio.com/?p=26788
