The first installment of our monthly patient support call covers a lot of ground. We discuss:

  1. The use of probiotics vs. yogurt for treating SIBO
  2. Addressing emotional trauma to help patients find relief from physical symptoms
  3. Time frames for using antimicrobials to improve gut health
  4. Constipation as a symptom, and the role of antimicrobials in addition to diet and other approaches
  5. A case study describing how a single symptom led to a diagnosis of mold illness in a 73-year-old man (and a motorcycle chase!)

Questions from patients allow us to showcase the clinic’s research arm, put progressively more resources into making sure that our diagnostic and treatment process is sound, and ensure that science is thoroughly integrated into our clinical model.

Join us every second Friday with your questions, or just listen in.

Today’s podcast episode features the latest gut health research, my thoughts on how these studies fit into what we’re doing at the clinic, and how I use the information in the studies to consider whether we’re practicing in accordance with current science or if we need to consider modifying our approach.

This latest batch of studies examines:

  • The impact of low FODMAP diets on IBS
  • A meta-analysis of the efficacy of rifaximin in treating SIBO
  • A prospective study of IBS patients who derived benefits from a gluten-free diet even though they were not strictly compliant with the diet
  • The relationship between the oral microbiota and SIBO
  • A study of patients with leaky gut whose symptoms improved 3,000% with a low FODMAP diet as compared to a gluten-free diet

…and more. Listen and learn.

Health technology tools such as the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Device can help you improve your metabolic health by providing a picture of how your lifestyle factors – including diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, and sleep – affect your blood glucose levels.

However, these tools are only as good as the user’s mindset and basic understanding of the science behind the numbers.

Dr. Ronesh Sinha explains how to regard the CGM as an opportunity to learn about your body rather than getting stressed about single data points, and how to cultivate healthy glucose levels through a balanced lifestyle.

There are a lot of incentives in the functional health marketplace to rely on lab testing to make treatment decisions. Unfortunately, this model often serves the bottom lines of lab companies better than it serves patients.

At the clinic, we use a science-guided framework that is oriented to improving clinical outcomes rather than just focusing on lab results.

Our patient-centered approach speaks for itself. Listen in as Dr. Joe, Gavin and I discuss.

Anyone who’s dealt with symptoms of mold toxicity such as brain fog, insomnia, fatigue and digestive disturbances has likely also experienced the fear and worry that often arises in response. These psychological symptoms can make an already distressing situation even more stressful.

In this podcast episode, I provide an update for listeners about what happened after mold was discovered in a second home in Austin. I describe how I navigated my way through a variety of related concerns and how this process mirrors the diligence and analytic scrutiny that I bring to helping patients at the clinic.

High quality health research provides evidence that is robust, ethical, and can be used to support good healthcare decision-making. It improves the lives of patients by enabling healthcare providers to effectively determine the root of problems, make informed decisions about patient care, and avoid the guessing games that can plague attempts to diagnose complex health issues.

However, when a study (such as the one we discuss here) is plagued with methodological flaws, it adds little to the existing scientific knowledge base, and has scant value to offer patients trying to get better and clinicians who are trying to help them.

This podcast episode is a look into our clinical evaluation process that tells us what’s actually going on with patients and how we can best help them, rather than cherry-picking data that supports an already-decided conclusion.

When a group of researchers looked at 1800 patients to see which condition was most strongly associated with SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), they were surprised to find hypothyroidism at the top of the list. A number of other studies over the last few years have pointed to a significant connection between bacterial overgrowths in the gut and thyroid health. Most importantly (and shockingly for many), research has now shown that probiotics, which improve gut health, SIBO, inflammation, and absorption of medication, can also help to normalize TSH levels, improve persistent hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, and reduce the need for levothyroxine and other thyroid meds. Watch this quick video to learn more about the SIBO-thyroid connection and how you can use this information to improve your health.

MCT oil is a nutritional supplement widely used for weight loss, cognitive health, improved metabolism and keto diets. It offers many benefits for those who are unable to break down dietary fats and is helpful for lowering blood sugar, improving insulin resistance, and supporting cognitive function, as well as for patients with Alzheimers and Crohn’s disease.

Although safe for most people, MCT oil poses potential risks for people with certain health conditions. Learn how to maximize its benefits and reduce side effects when incorporating it into your diet.

Beth had a long history of gastrointestinal issues, a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s, chronic fatigue and several food intolerances… to name a few. She was taking thyroid medication as prescribed, but it didn’t seem to help. Then, she started working with Dr. Joe Mather from our clinic, who worked through our science-based, algorithmic process to find a better way. Beth and Dr. Mather worked together, focusing on implementing a new diet, beginning probiotic therapy and using other evidence-based tools. Not only was she able to safely discontinue her thyroid medication, but she soon saw improvements in fatigue, constipation, metabolic issues, food tolerance, heavy metal toxicity and more. Listen in as Dr. Joe and I detail step-by-step how our model helped to make this happen. You’ll also hear Beth tell her story in her own words.

The protozoa Blastocystic hominis, long thought to be a cause of IBS, is receiving renewed attention in the functional and integrative medicine field. A growing body of evidence shows that Blasto may be benign in its impact and, in fact, may not even be a parasite as was previously assumed.

In this podcast episode, I review a sampling of studies that examine the prevalence of Blasto in patients with IBS, and consider the effects of treatment on both Blasto and symptomology.

The takeaway for practitioners is we should always treat the patient rather than the lab result, and even consider a more conservative approach to recommending labs for gut symptoms.

When it comes to keeping our brains healthy, one of the tools at our disposal is far from new. In fact, it has been around since the beginning of human history.

The health benefits of fasting are well-established, and it turns out that the brain may benefit from the metabolic reset that fasting enables. Keto diets fall into this same category. A combination of the two may be able to help ward off a variety of degenerative conditions and help us maintain brain health as we age.

In this podcast, Dr. Matthew Phillips, a clinical neurologist, talks about his research and experience with using fasting to address Alzheimers, Parkinsons, epilepsy and other conditions. Our discussion offers food for thought on the use of dietary interventions to improve metabolic health.

Food sensitivity testing is one of the diagnostic tools most widely recommended by functional medicine practitioners to their patients, and it has blossomed into a lucrative industry that nets millions of dollars per year for companies that market these home testing kits to consumers.

But the science behind these tests is flawed. In this podcast, I discuss how getting to the root of food reactions relies on evidence-based trials that ultimately helps patients heal without asking them to spend thousands on faulty testing.

Other podcast highlights include a case study from an FFMR subscriber who helped a patient with known environmental exposure by applying the principles of the FFMR (and without testing).

Also featured are rapid research briefs from the FFMR plus with a look at why iron deficiency even without anemia can be a significant clinical issue requiring active treatment, and dietary interventions for treating eosinophilic esophagitis.
