Today I had a fantastic discussion with Dr. Paul Anderson regarding integrative cancer care. Dr. Anderson did a great job providing a reasonable, balanced overview on this topic. We cover topics including cancer screening, diets for cancer, natural medicines for cancer and why integrative cancer care is a marriage of both conventional and natural medicine rather than an either/or scenario.

Gut microbiota is the newest health craze. Problems with the good bacteria in the intestines have been correlated with everything from obesity to cardiovascular disease. However,correlation does not mean causation, and certainly does not mean we have successful treatments. So what about microbiota and weight gain? Can we manipulate the microbiota with probiotics or prebiotics to achieve weight loss? The answers might surprise you.

This was a great discussion with Heidi Turner. Heidi and I first discuss how to efficiently navigate the sea of available diets. We also detail what I think may be the most important diet to consider after one has tried paleo, autoimmune paleo and low FODMAP – the low sulfur diet. The good news is that you can run this experiment in just a few days.

A well performed study has recently provided answers to pressing questions like;

  • What symptoms are associated with gluten sensitivity
  • How long after ingestion does it take for symptoms to occur
  • Can lab testing diagnose gluten sensitivity
  • What is the association to autoimmune conditions
  • What percentage of the population suffers with gluten sensitivity

Helminth therapy essentially refers to using health-promoting worms in a very similar manner to how we use probiotics. Healthy helminths may be an important, and missing, part of our gut microbiota communities. By restoring these to our intestinal tract it may be possible to reduce inflammation, balance the immune system and improve autoimmunity. Today we speak with Dr. Nancy O’Hara who has been using helminths in her clinical practice for years.

Increased diversity of the intestinal microbiota (world of bacteria) generally appears to be a good thing. Can we achieve increased diversity by administering agents that kill bacteria? Can antibiotics or antimicrobial herbs increase diversity? Let’s discuss an important but often overlooked concept.

Biofilms are protective coatings that bacteria and fungus form to protect themselves from antibiotics and herbal treatment. Biofilms may be at the root of infections that won’t go away like Candida, fungus, H. pylori and SIBO. Today I speak with Dr. Paul Anderson on how to identify if biofilms are affecting you and what you can do about it.

A low FODMAP diet can help with IBS and the gas, bloating, abdominal pain and bowel irregularity that occur in IBS.  We have previously discussed how a low FODMAP diet can heal your intestines by normalized intestinal cells, like intestinal
serotonin cells.  Today we speak with a researcher who has been publishing these findings.  This is an extremely interesting episode which helps covers;

  • understanding how the low FODMAP diet works
  • when to use the low FODMAP diet
  • who might want to avoid the low FODMAP diet
  • special modifications to make if you have IBS with constipation.

A must listen/read.

Today I answer an audience question regarding hives aka urticaria.  We’ll discuss what causes urticaria and how it can be treated both naturally and with medications. There is a gut and autoimmune component to urticaria, and the treatments are applicable to many other gut and autoimmune conditions.

Today we follow up on our recent conversation on helminth therapy, aka intestinal worms.  We speak with Garin Aglietti, who is a worm farmer and works first-hand in helping people rebalance their gut ecology with worms.  As weird as it sounds, intestinal worms used to be the norm and the current day absence of them may open the door for inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

Should you take probiotics while being treated with antibiotics or antimicrobial herbs? Or should you take probiotics after treatment to “re-seed” or “re-populate” the gut? Let’s dispel a few common misconceptions around these two questions.

I recently spoke at the International Congress on Natural Medicine in Hunter Valley, Australia.  There were lots of questions from the audience on gut and thyroid, which I did not have time to answer.  Today, I answer these questions with Nathan Rose, an organizer from the conference.  I think you will enjoy these questions, which get to the bottom line regarding what to do for improving gut and thyroid health.

Red meat is often vilified as being unhealthy, artery clogging, cancer promoting, etc.… However, a recent meta-analysis has found that it might be unhealthy behaviors that accompany red meat consumption that are responsible and not the red meat itself.  Let’s discuss.

The impact of the gut on one’s overall health is quite remarkable.  Knowing this leads to a very tempting proposition – map the world of bacteria in your gut and then treat imbalances to prevent and reverse disease.  Sounds reasonable, but there are some major errors with this assumption.  Understanding what to do and what not to do can prevent hundreds of dollars in useless testing and treatment.  Today we speak with one of the leading researchers in the world in this area, professor Rob Knight.

Gluten free diets can certainly be helpful, no question. However, there are some people who go gluten free and don’t feel fully improved.  There is a well identified and somewhat simple answer that may help these people, a low FODMAP diet. Let’s discuss a recent study that found that FODMAP avoidance was more effective for those with self-diagnosed non-celiac gluten sensitivity than was gluten avoidance.

I wanted to share with you today a recent interview I did with Dr. Ben Weitz on his podcast, the Rational Wellness Podcast, where we talked all about GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. I think you’ll like it. It’s a little bit longer than our normal videos, but we get pretty deep into GERD and there’s a lot to say here. We haven’t talked about it much in the past, so I’m hoping you’ll find the information both insightful, interesting, and above all else, hopefully useful.

A recent study has shown that probiotics can help reduce gas and improve constipation by decreasing levels of certain bacteria in the gut.  These bacteria include the organism responsible for methane SIBO (technically not a bacteria, it’s an archaea).  Was this a ‘special’ probiotic?  Not really.  Let’s discuss the details.
